"The World Is My Oyster: Camp Barker — A Contraband Camp"
During the Civil War, thousands of enslaved people fled to Washington, D.C., seeking freedom behind Union lines. They were classified as "contraband of war" — and Camp Barker, established in 1862 near present-day Vermont Avenue and U Street NW, became one of the first places where these freedom seekers found refuge.
This powerful historical stage production brings that story to life — exploring themes of freedom, faith, resilience, and community. Through music, drama, dance, and spoken word, we honor the courage of those who dared to dream of a world where their worth would be recognized.
"The World Is My Oyster" is more than a play. It's a movement — connecting our past to our present, empowering our youth, and celebrating the unbreakable spirit of the Black community.
